Wednesday, July 14, 2004, 7PM, "Life, Death, and
Denali" with Bob Lehman for Cascades
Mountaineers at the Environmental Center
"Life, Death and Denali" is about Bob Lehman's third trip to
Denali, to climb one of its harder routes, the Northwest Buttress. The route is
a Fred Beckey first ascent and one of the least-climbed routes on the mountain.
The climb involves extensive glacier travel on one of Denali's most treacherous
glaciers, the Peters Glacier, sustained steep snow and ice climbing up to 70
degrees, a section of corniced, crevassed, knife-edged ridge and all of this
with 70-pound packs. At 13,100 feet, simul-climbing the crux of the route, Bob
fell 150 feet, breaking the tib/fib on his right leg and bones in his right
foot, and pulling tendons and ligaments in his left leg. This slideshow is about
this trip -- the climb leading up to the accident, the 4 1/2 days after the
accident waiting out a huge storm in a snow cave, and finally the National Park
high altitude helicopter "short haul" rescue.

Friday, September 10, 2004, 8 to 9:30PM on NBC, Aaron Ralston talks with Tom Brokaw about his solo adventure
"Search and rescue volunteers praised Ralston's ability to keep
his head and to do the unthinkable, but expressed concern that he put search and
rescue volunteers at risk in the remote and dangerous complexity of the canyons.
Ralston had the Essentials and experience needed to survive for five days and
walk out to civilization. He had the determination, self-confidence and
intellect to save himself. As always, an emergency cell phone might have helped
and should be carried by all, even the most experienced extreme mountaineers."
