Central Oregon Trail Alliance Awarded $20,000 in Grant

Central Oregon Trail Alliance Awarded $20,000 in Grant and Matching Funds, Money will Pay for Environmental Assessment for New Bike Trail Complex

BEND, OR. – May 5, 2005 - Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Willard Eckles Foundation, as well as matching funds from the US Forest Service Deschutes National Forest Unit. The grant funding will pay for an environmental assessment to facilitate new trails in the area bound by Benham Falls, Wanoga Snopark and Edison Snopark. USFS and COTA trail crews have already begun preliminary scouting, with biologists, botanists and soil scientists scheduled to begin work in Spring 2005. When completed, the new trail system should rival the Phil’s Trail complex in size and scope.

In other developments, COTA is working with USFS, Cascade Highlands and Bend Metro Parks and Recreation to reroute and reconnect several existing trails that have been affected by development North of Century Drive and West of the First on the Hill subdivision. COTA is also working with Mid-state Electric and USFS to reroute another section of trail near The Inn of the 7th Mountain due to a power line relocation.

COTA’s spring work party, on June 4, will celebrate National Trails Day by constructing new trail reroutes along Century Drive. Additional hands are needed, and interested parties can contact COTA at www.cotamtb.org to volunteer.

As Bend continues to grow, COTA will carry on with its mission of building and maintaining a truly world-class network of trails and urban connectors. Anyone interested in becoming part of COTA’s success can join the organization online at www.cotamtb.org and monitor the website for meeting and trail work times.

OK, what is TraditionalMountaineering doing reporting on Mountain Bicycling? Well, the short answer is lots of traditional mountaineers get to the mountains on bicycles! German alpinists rode their bikes loaded with their gear, to Switzerland in the 1930s, to assault the North Face of the Eiger. More recently, Goran Kropp rode a bicycle from Sweden to Mount Everest, climbed Everest solo and rode his bicycle back to Sweden!

The long answer is I have been impressed at the way our own mountain bicycling club, COTA, (Central Oregon Trails Alliance) does things here in Bend. Their trails west of Bend are superb. Get a map of Mountain Bike trails and ride or walk some yourself. These single track trails are a joy, and the bikers are polite and "glad to see ya". Until I can write more here, check the links below and see for yourself.

The Sport of Traditional Alpine Mountaineering
"Traditional Alpine Mountaineering is basically an aerobic sport. Climbing, jogging, running, hiking the hills, backpacking, mountain biking, back country skiing, snowshoeing, telemark skiing, adventure racing and similar sports all act together to improve aerobic capacity, strength, balance and athleticism. Some of my companions were born with these gifts; I had to work hard at improving my abilities and to climb well. What workouts are you enjoying?"
